John Robertson MP calls for equal treatment for agency workers

John Robertson MP today called for action to ensure equality of pay and conditions for agency workers.

John said “it is abhorrent and unjust to have a two tier system where 1.4 million people are treated as second class employees. We need to make sure that this blatant exploitation, which denies agency workers a fair day’s pay, is brought to an end.”

“I am supporting Andrew Miller MP whose private member’s Bill seeks to redress the balance and give agency workers the rights and pay that other employees get, and which they are entitled to. Currently we have a staggered system which legitimises discrimination on an artificial basis and only leads to a race to the bottom in terms of pay and conditions.”

“Agency workers are often used to undercut permanent workforces and this serves to create division and resentment. The Labour movement has always been about people being stronger when they stand together – the many and not the few. Whilst agency workers often fill posts which are considered temporary and this is a legitimate part of the market, this does not justify second class treatment.”
